Nexus Insights is a group of fellows fueled by a common passion and commitment to advance the well-being of older adults through innovative models of housing and healthcare.
We have an incredible moment, an incredible opportunity to drive innovation, to disrupt and create substantive change.
Why Now: The Creation of Nexus Insights
What we provide now for older adults and their families is a complete failure. It flunks and we can and must do better. We can as long as we work together and combine our insights without territorial protection around those insights.
Our esteemed Nexus Fellows have identified a handful of major catalysts for enormous opportunities to improve the housing and health industries. COVID-19 offered a glaring spotlight on the brokenness of our healthcare and long-term care system, which many had willingly ignored previous to the pandemic. Another unearthed issue is the blatant ageism underlying the structures that devalues and deprioritizes the lives of older adults.
Increased longevity throughout our nation offers the opportunity to thrive for older adults. We have a new customer defined as an individual who has lived through the accidental longevity of a parent and now wants to be intentional in thinking about what their own longevity looks like.
This has enormous implications for how we should think about education, careers, timeouts, and rethink aging as something that happens throughout our lives.
The Nexus 4: How We Are Different
We’re more than just a think tank. In fact, one of our esteemed fellows has referred to us as a “Think and do tank”. Nexus encompasses four characteristics and uniquely embraces all four to drive change and create actionable models in housing and healthcare.
- VISIONARY: Nexus wants to cast a positive light affirming vision for older adults and their role in society. This means we need to reframe the age-old and ageist thinking of establishing a model for the boomers or older folks.
- INNOVATIVE: We are called Nexus Insights because our entire mission is seeking the juncture, the intersection point that comes from differing insights, perspectives and different industries to see what we can accomplish together.
- PRACTICAL: We’re going to put our best ideas out on the table and then we’re going to push each other past our comfort zones so we can be forced to recognize what is missing. How can we move forward together as a collective group that we can’t do individually?
- STRATEGIC: We need to be strategic in our language, our messaging, which audiences to target and when? Timing is critical. If you bring an issue to a policymaker at the wrong time, you’ve wasted your time, even if the issue was right on target.
